Ask the kid!

I hear and see a lot of people asking questions about their child’s behavior without asking the child about the child’s behavior. Now, it is possible that a child does not know why she is acting in a particular way, or what is stressing him out about a particular situation, but surely that is the place to start! Even if the child doesn’t give a hugely informative answer, the way they answer may be informative anyway.

Or ask the child why he got into trouble. If she thinks it’s for something totally trivial then perhaps no punishment will work because the child doesn’t know what he did wrong or why he is being punished.

So ask the kid! Maybe she knows the answer!
